A
A2A Adenosine Receptor
The cell-surface receptor that PDRN binds to in order to trigger its regenerative effects. When PDRN activates this receptor, it sends a "healing" signal that stimulates collagen production and reduces inflammation. Think of it as the doorbell PDRN rings to start the repair process.
Adenosine
A nucleoside that PDRN partially metabolizes into. Adenosine itself is a well-known skincare ingredient (used in many Korean creams) for firming and anti-aging. When PDRN breaks down in skin, some of it converts to adenosine — giving PDRN a dual-action benefit.
Ampoule
A highly concentrated serum, typically sold in small vials or a single dropper bottle. In Korean skincare, an ampoule sits between toner and moisturizer in routine order and is considered a targeted "booster" treatment. PDRN ampoules typically contain higher concentrations than PDRN serums or toners.
Angiogenesis
The formation of new blood vessels. PDRN promotes angiogenesis in treated tissue, which improves oxygen and nutrient delivery to skin cells. This is part of why PDRN can improve dull skin tone and dark circles — better microcirculation means healthier-looking skin.
C
c-PDRN
Also known as: Cross-Linked PDRN
A more advanced form of PDRN where the nucleotide chains are chemically cross-linked to increase stability and bioavailability. c-PDRN degrades more slowly in formulations and after application, meaning more active ingredient reaches your skin cells. Used exclusively by Rejuran in their consumer topical line.
Ceramide
Lipid molecules that form a critical part of the skin's protective barrier. Often paired with PDRN because PDRN repairs skin from within while ceramides seal the barrier from outside. Many PDRN creams (e.g., Medicube, Genabelle) include ceramides as a complementary ingredient.
Centella Asiatica
Also known as: Cica, Tiger Grass, Gotu Kola
One of K-beauty's most beloved calming ingredients. Contains madecassoside, asiaticoside, and asiatic acid — all with anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. Frequently paired with PDRN (Heveblue, iUNIK, Anua) because both are anti-inflammatory and regenerative. The combination is synergistic.
Collagen (Topical)
Protein that gives skin its firmness. Topical collagen itself cannot penetrate deep enough to replace structural collagen — it works primarily as a humectant and surface smoother. PDRN is more effective for collagen because it stimulates your skin to produce its own collagen rather than depositing external protein.
D
Dermis
The middle layer of skin, below the epidermis. This is where fibroblasts, collagen, and elastin live. Injectable PDRN is delivered directly into the dermis, making it more effective for structural anti-aging. Topical PDRN reaches the upper dermis. This difference explains why injectables show stronger clinical results.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)
The molecule that carries genetic information in all living cells. PDRN is derived from salmon DNA — specifically purified fragments of DNA called polynucleotides. The "DNA" in salmon DNA skincare refers to these purified nucleotide chains, not intact genetic code that could alter your DNA.
E
Elastin
The protein that gives skin its ability to snap back after stretching. Elastin production declines with age, leading to sagging and loss of "bounce." PDRN stimulates fibroblasts to produce both collagen and elastin — the combination that gives treated skin its characteristic plumpness and resilience.
Exosomes
Nano-sized vesicles (tiny "packages") secreted by cells, containing growth factors, proteins, RNA, and other signaling molecules. Exosomes are an emerging skincare ingredient often compared to PDRN. Key difference: PDRN has 25+ years of clinical data; exosomes are cutting-edge with a smaller but growing evidence base. More expensive than PDRN with less proven track record.
Epidermis
The outermost layer of skin — the part you can see and touch. Topical products interact primarily with the epidermis and upper dermis. The epidermis has no blood vessels, which is why deeply acting ingredients like PDRN benefit from delivery methods that bypass it (microneedling, mesotherapy).
F
Fibroblast
The primary cell in the dermis responsible for producing collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. PDRN's most important action is stimulating fibroblast proliferation — essentially telling these cells to work harder and produce more structural proteins. This is the core mechanism behind PDRN's anti-aging efficacy.
Fragrance-Free
A formulation that contains no added synthetic or natural fragrance. Fragrance is the #1 contact allergen in skincare. For PDRN products, fragrance-free is highly recommended — especially because many PDRN users have sensitive skin, and because fragrance can counteract PDRN's anti-inflammatory benefits. Rejuran's topical line is fragrance-free.
G
Ginseng-Derived PDRN
Also known as: Vegan PDRN, Plant-Based PDRN
A PDRN-equivalent ingredient extracted from Korean Panax ginseng rather than salmon. Pioneered by VT Cosmetics. Contains similar nucleotide structures to salmon PDRN but with zero fish source — making it suitable for vegans and fish allergy sufferers. Less clinical research exists than for salmon PDRN, but consumer results are positive.
Growth Factors
Signaling proteins that stimulate cell growth, proliferation, and repair. Often mentioned alongside PDRN. While both are regenerative, growth factors (EGF, TGF-β) work through protein-receptor signaling, while PDRN works through nucleotide-receptor activation. Many professional-grade PDRN formulations (Dermaheal) combine both.
H
Hyaluronic Acid (HA)
A naturally occurring humectant that can hold up to 1,000x its weight in water. Unlike PDRN (which stimulates the skin to produce its own HA), topical HA works by attracting moisture from the environment and deeper skin layers. They pair excellently together — PDRN provides long-term structural benefit while HA provides immediate hydration.
HTD-GENACOMPLEX
Genabelle's proprietary patented delivery system, designed to enhance PDRN penetration and stability in their formulations. An example of how premium brands differentiate their PDRN products beyond raw concentration claims — the delivery vehicle matters as much as the active ingredient concentration.
I
INCI Name
International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients — the standardized scientific names used on ingredient lists worldwide. PDRN appears on INCI lists as "Polydeoxyribonucleotide," "Sodium DNA," "Hydrolyzed DNA," or "Salmon DNA Extract" depending on the form. If you see any of these on a label, PDRN is in the product.
M
Mesotherapy
A medical technique involving microinjections of active ingredients directly into the mesoderm (middle layer) of skin. PDRN is one of the most popular mesotherapy ingredients in Korean and European aesthetic clinics. Mesotherapy delivers PDRN far more efficiently than topical application — bypassing the epidermis entirely.
Micro-Spicule
Also known as: Spicule Technology, Reedle Technology
Microscopic needle-like structures derived from freshwater sponge (Spongilla). When applied to skin, spicules create tiny micro-channels that dramatically improve active ingredient penetration — without the pain or downtime of actual needles. VT Cosmetics pioneered the use of spicule technology in their PDRN Reedle Shot products.
Microneedling
A procedure using fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in skin, triggering a healing response that produces collagen. When combined with PDRN serum applied immediately after, the open microchannels allow PDRN to penetrate far deeper than normal topical application — making this one of the most effective PDRN delivery methods outside of full injection.
MFDS
Also known as: Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, KFDA
South Korea's equivalent of the FDA. The MFDS approved Rejuran Healer (injectable PDRN) as a Class III medical device for aesthetic use in 2014 — making South Korea the first country to formally approve PDRN for cosmetic injection. This approval is frequently cited as evidence of PDRN's safety and efficacy.
Milt
The sperm-containing fluid (semen) of male fish — the source of salmon PDRN. The DNA is extracted from the sperm cells found in milt. Despite the description, the final PDRN ingredient retains no sperm cells, proteins, or any other biological material — only the purified nucleotide polymer. "Salmon milt extract" = the raw material; "PDRN" = the purified final ingredient.
N
NAD+
Also known as: Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide
A coenzyme involved in cellular energy production and DNA repair. Levels decline with age. Some advanced PDRN products (notably Numbuzin No.5 Serum) combine NAD+ with PDRN for a synergistic cellular renewal effect — PDRN triggers the repair signaling, NAD+ provides the cellular fuel to carry it out.
Niacinamide
Also known as: Nicotinamide, Vitamin B3
One of skincare's most versatile ingredients. Reduces melanin transfer (brightening), minimizes pore appearance, supports the skin barrier, and has anti-inflammatory properties. Freely compatible with PDRN — many products combine both (Medicube, Genabelle). Together, PDRN + Niacinamide + Vitamin C is one of the most researched brightening combinations in K-beauty.
Nucleotide
The basic building block of DNA and RNA. A nucleotide consists of a sugar, a phosphate group, and one of four bases (adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine). PDRN is a chain of these nucleotides. When PDRN is absorbed by skin cells, it provides raw material for DNA repair and synthesis — like delivering building blocks to a construction site.
P
PDRN
Full name: Polydeoxyribonucleotide
The star ingredient of this entire guide. A purified chain of DNA fragments (50–2,000 base pairs) extracted from salmon DNA. Works by activating A2A adenosine receptors to trigger collagen production, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue repair. Used medically since the 1990s; entered K-beauty aesthetics around 2014.
PN / PNTX
Also known as: Polynucleotides
The European name for essentially the same ingredient class as PDRN. Polynucleotides tend to be longer chain fragments (vs. PDRN's shorter fragments) and are more commonly used in European aesthetic medicine (especially through the Placentex Integro brand). In consumer skincare, PDRN and PN are often used interchangeably — both are salmon DNA-derived nucleotide polymers.
Panthenol
Also known as: Provitamin B5, Dexpanthenol
A deeply hydrating and barrier-repairing ingredient derived from Vitamin B5. Frequently found alongside PDRN (Rejuran's formula includes it). Reduces TEWL (transepidermal water loss), speeds wound healing, and calms irritation. Perfectly complements PDRN's regenerative action with a hydration and barrier-repair mechanism.
Parvalbumin
The primary protein responsible for fish allergies. Found in fish muscle tissue. This is what fish-allergic immune systems react to. Importantly, parvalbumin is a protein — and PDRN is a nucleotide polymer, not a protein. Proper purification removes all parvalbumin from PDRN, which is why pure PDRN products carry a very low allergy risk for most fish allergy sufferers.
Peptides (Skincare)
Short chains of amino acids that send specific signals to skin cells. Different peptides do different things: signal peptides tell skin to produce collagen; carrier peptides deliver minerals; neurotransmitter-affecting peptides temporarily relax facial muscles. PDRN and peptides are highly compatible and often combined (Medicube's Pink Peptide Serum, Numbuzin No.5). Both stimulate collagen but through different pathways.
Placentex Integro
An Italian pharmaceutical product by Mastelli — the most clinically studied PDRN/PN injectable in the world. Originally approved as a wound-healing drug, it became widely used in aesthetic medicine. Contains highly purified PDRN in an injectable solution. The gold standard reference product in PDRN clinical research. EU-approved; not FDA-approved for cosmetic injection in the US.
ppm (Parts Per Million)
A concentration measurement used in skincare. Some brands (notably Genabelle) use ppm to indicate PDRN concentration — their Rejuvenating Cream contains 1,000ppm PDRN. This is one of the few transparent concentration disclosures in consumer PDRN products. Higher ppm = more PDRN per application, but delivery efficiency and formulation quality also matter.
R
Reedle Shot
VT Cosmetics' proprietary technology combining PDRN (ginseng-derived) with spicule microstructures. The spicules act as microscopic needles to create micro-channels in skin, allowing the PDRN to penetrate more deeply than regular topical application. The "shot" in the name refers to the delivery mechanism, not an actual injection — it's a topical product.
Rejuran Healer
The injectable PDRN product developed by Rejuran (South Korea) that launched PDRN into mainstream aesthetic medicine in 2014. MFDS-approved as a Class III medical device. Contains c-PDRN in sterile saline solution for intradermal injection. The clinical results from Rejuran Healer trials are frequently cited as evidence for topical PDRN efficacy — though the two delivery methods are not directly comparable.
Retinol
A vitamin A derivative and the most-studied anti-aging ingredient in skincare. Works by binding to nuclear receptors and changing gene expression to accelerate cell turnover and collagen production. More irritating than PDRN but with a stronger long-term wrinkle-reduction evidence base. The two ingredients are complementary rather than competing — PDRN reduces retinol's irritation while retinol accelerates the cell renewal that PDRN's repair supports.
S
Salmon Roe Extract
Extract from salmon eggs (roe), containing growth factors, proteins, and lipids. Used in some PDRN products (Heveblue) alongside PDRN for a synergistic regenerative effect. Unlike PDRN, salmon roe extract DOES contain proteins — meaning it carries a higher allergy risk for fish-sensitive individuals than pure PDRN alone.
Skin Booster
A term used primarily in aesthetic medicine for injectable treatments that improve overall skin quality (hydration, texture, radiance) rather than targeting specific wrinkles or volume loss. PDRN is one of the most popular skin booster treatments in South Korean and European clinics — often marketed as "skin booster injections" as an alternative to filler.
Spicule
Microscopic silica needle structures found in freshwater sponge (Spongilla lacustris). When included in a skincare product and applied to skin, spicules mechanically create micro-channels that dramatically increase active ingredient penetration — without the professional setup of microneedling. The key technology behind VT Cosmetics' Reedle Shot line.
T
TEWL
Full name: Transepidermal Water Loss
The passive loss of water through the skin's barrier to the atmosphere. High TEWL = compromised skin barrier = dry, irritated skin. PDRN supports barrier repair by stimulating fibroblasts, which helps reduce TEWL over time. This explains why consistent PDRN users often report that their skin "holds moisture better" after weeks of use.
TNF-α
Full name: Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha
A key pro-inflammatory cytokine — one of the main molecules that triggers redness, swelling, and inflammatory responses in skin. PDRN suppresses TNF-α production, which is the primary mechanism behind its anti-inflammatory effects. This makes PDRN uniquely able to calm the irritation caused by other active ingredients like retinol.
V
Vegan PDRN
See: Ginseng-Derived PDRN. A plant-based alternative to salmon-sourced PDRN, derived from Korean Panax ginseng. Contains similar nucleotide structures. The only commercially available consumer product line as of 2025 is VT Cosmetics' PDRN range. Zero animal-derived ingredients — suitable for vegans and fish allergy sufferers.
VEGF
Full name: Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor
A signaling protein that stimulates blood vessel growth (angiogenesis). PDRN increases VEGF expression by 60–120% in treated tissue. More blood vessels = better circulation = more oxygen and nutrients delivered to skin cells = healthier, more radiant complexion. This is part of why PDRN treatment can dramatically improve dullness and dark circles.
Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)
A powerful antioxidant and brightening ingredient. Inhibits melanin production, stimulates collagen synthesis, and protects against UV-induced damage. Excellent synergy with PDRN: a 2022 study found PDRN + Vitamin C produced the greatest reduction in melanin synthesis of any two-ingredient combination tested. Apply Vitamin C before PDRN in morning routines.
